Arthritis is a series of health disorders that affect a person’s joints. Common symptoms include pain, swelling, stiffness, redness of the skin, warmth and a decreased range of motion. Symptoms may range from mild to very severe. The onset of symptoms can be gradual or sudden. Typically, if not treated, the symptoms will get worse over time to the point where daily tasks will prove difficult.

The most common forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis (OA) which is a degenerative bone disease and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The cartilage that is found in the joint wears away through repeated damage and cannot easily regenerate because of insufficient blood supply. Over the years and over repeated damage, arthritis forms and the joint changes in structure as well as function from the physical damage. As the cartilage breaks down, inflammatory processes increase, more cartilage breaks down and arthritis sets in.

Conventional Treatment for arthritis may include rest, weight loss, applying ice and heat to reduce pain, exercise, joint replacement and pain medications. It is targeted toward improving the quality of life for the patient, reducing pain and inflammation, however, there is no conventional medicine that can reverse disease progression.

How can PEMF help? PEMF therapy stimulates tissue repair, treats pain and inflammation and improves joint function.

PEMF research shows that PEMF helps to reduce inflammation and pain, as well as increase joint capsule cell growth and increases collagen production. The stimulation of stem cells help repair and regenerate tissue.

In the study cited here, Veronesi et. al. showed that the fundamental underlying process of progression of arthritis can be slowed or stopped, even in the presence of fairly severe arthritis with PEMF.

This study showed that those who had PEMF therapy showed that their:
• Cartilage thickness was significantly greater
• Had lower evidence of cartilage damage and degeneration
• Bone thickness significantly reduced under the joint capsule
• Had fewer inflammatory markers
• Cell appearance and integrity were intact
• Decreased cartilage surface irregularities

The research shows us that PEMF therapies are a very important tool for the treatment of arthritis. The use of PEMF will decrease the progression of arthritis as well as help with inflammation and pain.
